AP Spanish Syllabus 2023-2024
Course Overview: The AP© Spanish Language course is conducted completely in Spanish. I encourage all students throughout their Spanish studies to expand their interpersonal communications skills through daily classroom interactions in the language. This includes casual conversations with the instructor and peers as well as formal discussions. Class time will be dedicated to communicative activities in Spanish. You should come to class prepared to participate and to enthusiastically engage in a variety of activities in groups and pairs. If you need additional assistance with specific concepts you should see your instructor during office hours.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Students should be able to use the Spanish Language to:
- Understand conversations, lectures, oral presentations, newspapers, letters, instructions, Internet articles, and short stories.
- Express themselves orally by convincing, arguing, inquiring, and describing.
- Express themselves well in a variety of styles, using different strategies for different audiences.
- Analyze the main ideas and supporting data from written works (such as newspaper and magazine articles, essays, short stories from the text, and formative texts).
- Broaden their understanding of the cultures that comprise the Spanish-speaking world through the study of history, literature, art, music, and current events.
- Make connections between their learning in the Spanish Digital classroom, their learning in other classes, and their daily lives.
Informal writing: Students will keep weekly dialogue journals. These are graded periodically and on a rotating basis. Scoring considerations focus in improvement, word choice (dictionaries are allowed), and control of grammatical structures. Students choose their topic for each entry from a long list of suggested topics. Although many of these topics will never appear on an AP Exam since they are sensitive issues, many students will have a lot to say about controversial topics that are a part of today’s teen culture.
Formal Writing: Assignments will be done in class to simulate the exam conditions. The topic is unannounced and no outside resources can be consulted. The essays are peer-reviewed, revisions are made based on feedback, and the final version is scored using the AP scoring guidelines. Instruction in writing is evidenced by the use of peer editing, pre-writing, instruction in synthesis, and organization.
Student Activities (Including but not limited to)
Debates are an engaging activity to get AP students to use Spanish in the classroom. Students will begin in groups of four or five in which they discuss different facets related to a more global debate topic. After 10 minutes, each group reports to the class the opinions expressed in the small groups, inviting others to share the ideas by agreeing, disagreeing, or asking questions.
Community Service Learning Hours and Project
Students will be able to complete a Community Service Learning Project through the College Board and WE to receive recognition that will reflect on your AP College Score when sent out to Colleges and Universities. Hours for this are required for my class and for this recognition. We will see how this semester will go in terms of hours, please do not stress! We will get through this.
